Since 1979 citizens of the EU can vote for the European Parliament (EP). These elections take place every five years. This May in 2014, it will be the 8th election.

The EP is the largest trans-national democratic electorate in the world. Together with the European Commission (the Commission) and the Council of the EU (the Council) it is the legislative body of the EU.

The EP together with the Council is the legislative body of the EU while the Commission is the executive body. The EP elects the President of the Commission. More information you can find here:
